Jesu - Jesu
Tainting the droning metal of Godflesh and fusing it with more ambient noodling, Jesu has forged a new type of sound. That of drony special soundscapes with a metallic edge. The sounds resonate with those who love certain rawness, but also love a wistful space, an elongated stare at the stars. And much to my surprise, with certain pop sensibilities. A sweetness to the vocals, with a haunting quality to the music. The album as a whole takes the listener on a melancholic trip, a trip with moments of pure washed out depression, augmented with tides of anger; lush moments of pure metal anger. Each track is a story into itself, with a certain amount of self-loathing (or more fittingly self-reflexivity). It provides both the despair of making mistakes in life, but at the same time a certain uplifting spirit to suggest this is all natural. All humanity fails, we are in it together. The anger rises, but will subside, into a drifting dream like haze: the metallic bursts of pure loathing, while the faulter into pretty soft clouds of content. The world is corrected by a droning balance of gentle freedom of the spirit.
